4 Signs You’re Ready to Move in Together

So you and your significant other have been dating for a little while now. You’ve been dating long enough, and your relationship is serious enough, that you start to include them in your future plans. Naturally, you two feel like the next step is to live together. But this can be a deal breaker sometimes, and the last thing you want to do is move in together, only to break up and move out later. So you want to be really sure.

1

YOU PRACTICALLY LIVE TOGETHER ALREADY:

Let’s be real. You spend most nights there during the week. Weekends are by you. I mean, you all but live together at this point, much to the detriment of their roommates. You have toothbrushes at each other’s place, and you even have some clothes tucked away. I’d say it’s a safe bet that you two are ready to live together. I mean, you’re basically doing it anyway.

Being comfortable in each other’s space is a surefire sign that you’re both ready to take that next big step. Plus, if you’re practically wasting one rent a month, it makes more sense to live together and save money.

2

YOU’VE BEEN DATING FOR QUITE SOME TIME:

That’s not to say that those short-but-serious relationships aren’t considered move-in ready. But if you’ve been together for a significant amount of time, and you’re pretty sure you’ve seen and handled just about every curveball life can throw at you, then chances are it’s a good time to take things to the next level.

You know your significant other. You know them really well at this point. And if there was any doubt that they’re not the right person for you, then now’s the time to end the relationship and move on. But if you’re sure of your relationship, it’s likely a good time to take that next step.

3

YOU TWO HAVE MASTERED THE ART OF COMPROMISATION:

Compromising might just be the most important skill you’ll practice as a couple living together. You might want to watch the Kardashians, but there’s a major cricket game on and you know your boyfriend wants to watch it. Giving up the TV for him to watch what he loves is just an example of compromise. Living together is much more than just compromising about TV choices.

There are a million little choices every single day that require compromise and thought and discussion, but if you find yourself considering your significant other before making big decisions (and of course, vice versa!), you might be ready to move in together.

4

IT DOESN’T FEEL RIGHT NOT COMING HOME TO THEM:

Those of you in serious relationships will understand this one right away. There’s that feeling after you’ve spent the whole day away from your significant other, and all you want to do is sit on the couch and lime, or lay in bed and watch Netflix right next to him. This is probably the biggest sign that you’re ready to move in: you can’t picture not having them at home when you get there.

Keep in mind this is a major commitment, so you need to be sure you want to see them every single day, and not just when you’re feeling for them. Rain or shine, fighting or honeymoon, they’ll be home and living there just as long as you are, so make sure you’re ready before you take the plunge.
